Man Jailed for “Anti-Army” Tweet

Faisalabad: An additional district and sessions judge has sentenced a man to a five-year jail term and a fine of Rs250,000 for an ‘anti-army’ social media post.

The tweet was made after the helicopter crash in Lasbela district, Balochistan on August 1, 2022, which killed six senior military officers, including Commander 12 Corps Lt-Gen Sarfaraz Ali.

Sikandar Zaman, 30, was convicted of intending to spread panic in society through derogatory tweets against the army.

A four-member team constituted by the FIA Cyber Crime Circle, Faisalabad, arrested and tried Sikandar on charges of sharing derogatory tweets regarding the Lasbela helicopter incident.

He was found guilty under sections 20 and 24C of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and sections 500 and 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The court imposed a three-year jail term and a fine of Rs50,000 under Section 505 of the PPC and one-year jail term and Rs100,000 fine under Section 20 of PECA.
