FIR filed against Jirga that fined policemen Rs5 million

KARACHI: A case has been lodged against a jirga in Jacobabad, which had imposed a fine of Rs5 million on two policemen for killing two suspects in an alleged encounter.

The Jirga declared the two policemen, Dilawar Hussain Sabhayo and Muhammad Ali Panhwar, guilty of killing Bakhtiyar and Muhammad Sher of Jakhrani tribe in an alleged encounter with the police two years ago.

The district and session court judge Abdul Ghafoor Kalhoro took notice of the news and demanded that SSP Jacobabad Dr Sumair Noor Channa appear before the court and submit his report.

The FIR lists 17 suspects who participated in the jirga, which was headed by Sardarzada Mir Changez Khan Panhwar, son of former PPP MPA politician Mir Manzoor Khan Panhwar, and Mir Sabir Hussain Jakhrani, cousin of former PPP MNA Aijaz Jakhrani.

Despite the 2019 judgment by the Supreme Court of Pakistan declaring all jirgas illegal, this parallel justice system continues to exist in several areas of the country.
